Motivation for Learning Foreign Language Research Paper
Motivation for Learning Foreign Language - Research Paper Example Motivation to learn a foreign can also be defined as ââ¬Å"complex of constructs, involving both effort and desire, as well as a favorable attitude toward learning the language at handâ⬠(Winke, 2005, p3). In other words, the learner is encouraged to learn a foreign language because of the underlying factors such as integration into the society using the language. Motivation in learning a foreign language happens when the learners find importance in learning the language of the society they live in. The learners use the language to exchange opinions, and express their thoughts with each other and thus, increasing their urge to learn the language autonomously and continuously. Types of Motivation Motivation can be categorized into integrative motivation and instrumental motivation. Integrative motivation is defined as the learnerââ¬â¢s orientation towards learning second language (L2). Successful students in learning a foreign language tend to be those who admire people that speak the target language, like their culture and have the urge of integrating or becoming familiar with the society using the language. When an individual becomes a resident of a certain community that makes use of the target language in its daily interactions, integrative motivation becomes the key element in developing the level of language proficiency. It becomes mandatory for the individual to function socially within the community and becoming one of its members (Norris-Holt, 2001). On the other hand, instrumental motivation is characterized by the need to gain something concrete or practical from the learning of a second language. The goal of acquiring second language in instrumental motivation is utilitarian, for instance, meeting the necessities for university or school graduation, application for a job, reading technical material, attaining higher social status, translation work, or request for high pay based on the language ability. Instrumental motivation is common in in stances where the acquisition of a second language is not important for the learnerââ¬â¢s social integration into the society (Norris-Holt, 2001). Both instrumental and integrative motivations are important elements for success but it has been found that integrative motivation sustains long-term success in the learning of a second language. Research shows that integrative motivation is important in the formal learning setting or environment. It is important to note that both instrumental and integrative motivations are not necessarily mutually limited. Learners rarely choose one type of motivation when studying a second language. Instead, the learners combine both orientations. For instance, international students living in the United States learn English for academic reasons and at the same time, they desire to become incorporated with the culture and the people of the country. Motivation is an essential factor in second language achievement. Thus, it is crucial to determine the combination and form of motivation that helps in the effective acquisition of a foreign language (Norris-Holt, 2001). Gardnerââ¬â¢s Socio-Educational Model The model identifies factors that are interrelated in learning a second language. It is important to note that motivation to learn a second language is one variable and when combined with other factors, it influences the learnerââ¬â¢s success. The work of Gardner focuses on foreign language acquisition in a language classroom. The model tries to interconnect four characteristics of second language

Business Research for Decision Making, Red Tomatoe Company Essay
Business Research for Decision Making, Red Tomatoe Company - Essay Example bout the company is that the top management came from the ranks of the JRT and this could be identified as one of its strengths because these people are familiar with the ââ¬Å"ins and outsâ⬠of the company. Unfortunately, the company is on the rocks because key personnel started leaving last year because they realized that they have ââ¬Å"no future with JRTâ⬠. This backlash could be detrimental to the company because it had previous plans of expanding in the future. With this, this paper would thresh out the problems associated with the human resources (HR) planning of JRT and seek out the viable solutions to these problems. The previous HR consultant conducted preliminary interviews within the organization, undergone research of the produce industry and consulted other business cases with similar challenges. It has been found out that ââ¬Å"Juicy Red Tomato Company needs to invest in retention not only of its managerial personnel, but also front-line production employees. In addition, JRT needs to improve communication between production and operations, possibly by enhancing technology used by the company as a wholeâ⬠. With regards to organizational structure, it has been observed that the JRT has the traditional structure. According to Grinnell and Apple (1975), there are five general indications that the traditional structure may not be adequate for managing projects: Our observations agree with what Green and Apple (1975) identified as the problems that arise with the traditional organizational structure. In fact, many companies do not realize the necessity for organizational structure to change until it is too late. Management looks externally (i.e., to the environment) rather than internally for solutions to problems. A typical example would be that new product costs are rising while the product life cycle may be decreasing. Should emphasis be placed on lowering costs or developing new products? If JRT assumes that an organizational system is composed of both

Concert paper - Essay Example The venue received approximately 1500 patrons for the concert which lasted for approximately five hours. Event organizers ensured all patrons assumed their respective places before the concert began. Inside the church, there were VIP lounges at the front sections while general fans took the common seats. Prior to the kick off, ushers distributed program leaflets, which provided detailed chronological activities of the event to the settled crowd. The concert started just a few minutes past the scheduled time. Performing groups present were the University of Arizonaââ¬â¢s Symphonic Choir in conjunction with Arizona Choir attached to the St Paulââ¬â¢s Episcopal Church. The two choirs teamed up for preparation to present an event dubbed ââ¬Å"Serenadeâ⬠. Basically, it was an event involving an afternoon of performance in praise of Christian hymn music. The Universityââ¬â¢s Symphonic choir opened with a short performance of the song, ââ¬Å"How can I keep from singingâ⬠, which is a piece of art composed by Robert Lowry, a renowned hymn writer of American Christian music. The choir, under the guidance of Elizabeth Schauer, completed their opening presentation upon which they paved way for the Arizona choir. Arizona Choir, with the support of the chamber orchestra comprising of 10 members, took to the stage with a spectacular performance of the song ââ¬Å"Serenade to musicâ⬠. The Arizona choir later backed up their earlier performance with ââ¬Å"Peter Quince at the C lavierâ⬠. At the stage, the eventââ¬â¢s artist groups integrated both vocal and instrumental elements in their performances. All the music performed by the groups in collaboration with the chamber orchestra was Christian hymns. The deliberate selection of this music style was meant to fit the purpose of creating an environment for an afternoon of praise. The first song performed by the Arizona University Symphonic choir was purely a Christian hymn song. The

E-Business is Better if Localized Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words
E-Business is Better if Localized - Essay Example Technological advancement and the introduction of computer-driven technologies in the business landscape have influenced how business is managed today. Computer-driven technologies are making it possible to turn out small runs of increasingly customized goods aimed at niche markets. Smart companies are moving from the production of long runs of commodity products to short runs of "higher value added" products (Toffler,1990,p.52). Financial markets are not spared from the upheaval. World capital markets throughout the globe are now interlinked via satellite, networks and technology. Globalization has linked formerly independent economies. When a cataclysm occurs within a globally linked financial system, the entire global market feels the ripples of the event. Businesses are no longer isolated entities that operate autonomously. Business environments are changing rapidly because of several factors. These changes make it difficult for companies to meet the challenge while using traditional business models. Barabba (1998,pp.34-59) attributes these three phenomena as factors of change: 2. Communications technologies improve and enable businesses to acquire deep and broad external knowledge of markets, allowing them "to better sense changes in customer requirements." These technologies will also allow companies "to Innovatively serve those markets."; and 3. "Technology is redefining the nature of competition." Murphy (1998) describes "a new business model or paradigm that he calls alternatively" an "internetworked (virtual) enterprise" or "extended enterprise." These new enterprises "encompass channel partners, remote workers, suppliers, distributors, and consumers through a secure Web-based global network." (ij and Saarinen,2001). Infrastructure to support this new development is provided by the Internet. The Internet allows companies to become decentralized and operate within the digital environment. To make this model work, this type of business organization must link all business functions (supply, purchasing, manufacturing, operations, transportation, financing, accounting, personnel, sales, and customer service), "all stakeholders (business partners, suppliers, service and technology providers, distributors, retailers, outsourcing partners, remote workers, and customers, competitors, financiers, and regulators), and all organizational capabilities (information system, self-regulatin g and self-organizing organizational structure, and reinvented virtual supply chain)" (ij and Saarinen, 2001). This is to create a holistic business approach in the digital milieu. The new business paradigm created by three new classes of business model -

Yamamoto Recording Media Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words
Yamamoto Recording Media - Essay Example Under the manufacturing department, capacity constraint combined with scheduled preventive maintenance and other unforeseen factors such as the absence of necessary raw materials can make the production department unable to meet its target schedule (Collins 7). Lack of support from manufacturing staff can also make it impossible for Fazer to meet his plan of cutting down the order-to-delivery cycle (9). With regards to its distribution network, shipping the final product to Yamato Logistics Europe (YLE) for warehousing and dispatching purposes can only add unnecessary expenses to the company. Therefore, YLE staff should be supportive of Fazanââ¬â¢s plan to change its role from warehousing and dispatching to a more responsive logistics and distribution hub in Europe (Collins 10). As a common business practice, the NSC department was made responsible in getting orders directly from customers or retailers which then will be submitted to P/S department for order scheduling and forecast (Collins 7, 9). Because of added work load, NSC staff has been skeptical to change the ordering plan from monthly period to weekly basis (9). On the other hand, unreliable demand forecast coming from the P/S department can also trigger some problems in the companyââ¬â¢s inventory level and the companyââ¬â¢s ability to fill the market demand (7). In product life cycle, manufacturing companies such as the case of Yamamoto should avoid products that are obsolete because of high levels of inventory.

Write up - Case Study Example his case, one strongly believes that there are organizational and structural problems that contribute to Chetââ¬â¢s level of stress, particularly found in the way that the organizational chart is designed. As shown in Figure 2.7, Chetââ¬â¢s position as Central Plant Manager indicates governing jurisdiction to 16 lines or chains of command. This means that 16 different personnel, with diverse responsibilities could report to him directly. Therefore, to manage stress using time management, Chet must recommend to higher management that the organizational structure be re-evaluated and redesigned so that stressors could be eliminated or minimized, as needed. As recommended in Whetton and Cameronââ¬â¢s management strategies for eliminating stressors (Table 2.3) through delegating responsibilities, collaboration and team building, work redesign and goal setting, the stress level of Chet would be appropriately managed. Based on developing self-awareness, Chet could manifest high levels of task motivation where he exemplified the desire to accomplish the defined open-end unit schedule but his persistence and productivity levels do not adhere to his defined objectives and goals. The inability to achieve these goals thereby contributes to his level of stress, in conjunction to his awareness that there needs to be a balance between time spent for his family and also to pursue leisure activities for his personal and professional growth. 4) Based on the case and your assessment of Chetââ¬â¢s personality, how would you advise Chet? What strategies/tools, and concepts from the chapter would you suggest to him to increase his effectiveness and lower his stress as a manger. Based on the case and on oneââ¬â¢s assessment of Chetââ¬â¢s personality, one would advise Chet to recommend to management a redesign of the organizational structure so that the personnel to report directly to him would be reduced and categorized according to human resources, inventory management, night operations and
